My birthday memories aren't about the presents I got from my mom and dad or my five brothers and sisters... They are about the cake!! The pink frozen Angel Food cake with strawberries and whipped cream frozen in the hollowed-out center. The cake was all that mattered!

We got six of them a year. Of course, when Mom's birthday rolled around, we made her chocolate cake from a mix. We did the best we could. But for dad and all five of the kids, we got that luscious strawberry cake with candles glowing. We were quick to blow them out so the cake wouldn't melt and we could dive in.

I can recall one time Mom tried something different — we couldn't disguise our disappointment. She never did that again. And to this day, we get that pink cake if we're home for a birthday!
